Weekend Preview: St. Thomas begins play at home

Six of eight CCHA teams will be in action this weekend and St. Thomas will host their first-ever NCAA Division I men's ice hockey games on their home-ice. In CCHA play, Bemidji State travels to Northern Michigan and Ferris State is on the road at St. Thomas. Michigan Tech and Minnesota State have the weekend off.

St. Thomas has been busy with CCHA contests so far, already playing four conference games this season, which is the most of any CCHA team. The Tommies have yet to find victory, dropping road series to Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State respectively but this weekend will be their first on home ice. St. Thomas is impressively tied for third nationally with eight power-play goals through six games, but are also fifth with 71 penalty minutes.
 
Ferris State returns to play after having the weekend off last week. The Bulldogs have played four games this season, beating the Miami Redhawks once and falling to Western Michigan twice. It is also the first CCHA series for Ferris State since the 2012-13 campaign. Jake Transit leads the Bulldogs with four points (1G, 3A) in four games so far. Logan Stein has played all minutes between-the-pipes for Ferris State this season.

Bemidji State heads into the weekend as the nationally 19th-ranked team and coming off an overtime road victory at seventh-ranked North Dakota. The Beavers are 1-3-0 on the year so far and will face a 2-1-0 Northern Michigan team on the road. Michael Carr and Gavin Enright have split time in goal for the Beavers and Tyler Kirkup is this week's CCHA Forward of the Week after scoring three times and adding an assist last week.
 
Northern Michigan earned a 5-3 victory over the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and dropped a decision to #17 Notre Dame last week. NMU's Charlie Glockner is the CCHA Goaltender of the Week after stopping all 19 shots faced against the Irish and making 41 saves on 44 shots against USNTDP. AJ Vanderbeck leads the Wildcats with six points (3G, 3A) in three games.

Bowling Green had last weekend off after earning a tie and an overtime victory on the road at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. The Falcons will play a home-and-home series with their in-state rival Miami Redhawks. Friday, Bowling Green will be at Miami before returning home for a Saturday night contest. BGSU's Nathan Burke has three goals in two games while Gabriel Chicoine has three assists in two games. Zack Rose leads Bowling Green in net with a 1.90 goals against average (GAA) and a .920 save percentage (SAV%).

The Lakers are coming off a weekend sweep on home-ice against St. Thomas and are in the middle of a six-game homestand in Sault Ste. Marie. LSSU is 3-3-0 on the season after splitting at Omaha and dropping two decisions in Ann Arbor to Michigan. Louis Boudon converted on a highlight-reel goal at Michigan that series. Lake Superior State has two players leading the CCHA with nine points each: Brandon Puricelli (4G, 5A) and Harrison Roy (3G, 6A). The Lakers also have two CCHA Players of the Week: Jacob Nordqvist (Defenseman) and Dawson Tritt (Rookie). Dawson earned three points last weekend and Tritt tallied a goal and two assists.
