Top Stories: CCHA posts successful first weekend

Week one is in the books for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and the league posted a successful weekend recording four victories over non-conference opponents over the course of the past two days.

Nationally fifth-ranked Minnesota State traveled to Amherst, Mass. and shutout the defending NCAA Division I National Champions and nationally first-ranked Massachusetts Minutemen on Saturday, before scoring six-unanswered goals to post a 6-3 victory and secure the weekend upset sweep Sunday. The Lake Superior State Lakers were in Omaha, Neb. and upset the 17th-ranked Mavericks on Saturday with a come-from-behind 4-3 overtime triumph. The win was Head Coach Damon Whitten's 100th behind the Lake Superior State bench. (Saturday Highlights)

Ferris State was down 2-1 after two periods of play Sunday but was able to fight back and secure a shorthanded goal in overtime to knock-off the Miami RedHawks to earn the weekend split. (Sunday Highlights)

The St. Thomas Tommies played their first-ever NCAA Division I men's ice hockey home game Sunday at the Xcel Energy Center, home of the NHL's Minnesota Wild but were unable to find the back of the net falling to the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-0. Saturday, Christiano Versich scored the first-ever goal for St. Thomas at the Division I level.

In exhibition play, Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan finished in a 4-4 tie before a capacity crowd in Houghton. #14 Bemidji State fell by a small 2-1 margin at North Dakota with Alex Ierullo scoring the lone goal and Michigan was too much for Bowling Green, winning 7-1.
