CCHA Weekend Preview: Nov. 11-13

One of the most entertaining weekends in the CCHA is upon us. This weekend marks one of the biggest rivalries in NCAA Hockey as Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan will face-off in a home and home series. Minnesota State faces rival Bowling Green, Bemidji State is on the road at Lake Superior State and Ferris State plays a home-and-home series with Michigan State.

This weekend marks the renowned in-state rivalry series between the Michigan Tech Huskies and the Northern Michigan Wildcats, one of the biggest rivalries in NCAA Hockey. Capacity crowds are expected at both the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena (4,200) in Houghton Friday and the Berry Events Center (4,300) in Marquette Saturday. 

All-time, NMU has one more win than their rival MTU in 165 contests, claiming victory in 76 contests while MTU owns 75 wins. The teams have tied a total of 15 times, including most recently when the Wildcats opened their preseason with an exhibition game against the Huskies in Houghton earlier this year. The two teams opened their competitive seasons against each other in early October, skating to a 4-4 draw in exhibition play.

In a series that dates back to the 2008-09 season, Minnesota State stands 18-10-3 in the all-time series vs. Bowling Green. The Mavericks have won the last five meetings between the two programs.  Minnesota State stands 10-5-0 vs. Bowling Green in games played in Mankato.
 

 

 

Bemidji State at Lake Superior State

BSU trails Lake Superior State 33-36-6 in an all-time series that got its start in 1966. BSU and LSSU met annually from 1966-73 as members of the International Hockey Association. The teams again became conference foes as members of the WCHA in 2013 and will meet for the first time in CCHA play this weekend. LSSU holds a 17-16-3 edge in the all-time series when hosted in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., however, BSU is unbeaten in its last two trips to Taffy Abel Arena (2-0-2).

Michigan State at Ferris State

After upsetting the No. 2 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on home ice this past Friday night, Ferris State traveled to East Lansing for a Thursday night tilt against Michigan State and fell 2-0. Saturday will be the second of two games between the two teams on the week as the Spartans will travel to Big Rapids Saturday. Michigan state was swept in a home-and-home series last weekend by Michigan. 

In the last home-and-home series between FSU and MSU, Michigan State won the first game 5-3 in East Lansing on Nov. 2, 2018 before Ferris State won the following night 4-1 in Big Rapids on Nov. 3. The Bulldogs are led by Liam MacDougall who has nine points (3G, 6A) in nine games. Logan Stein has a 3.48 GAA and a .887 SAV% and is the current CCHA Goaltender of the Week. Michigan State is led by Josh Nodler who has eight points (3G, 5A) in 10 games played and Mitchell Lewandowski who has seven points (3G, 4A) in five games. The Spartans top goalie is Drew DeRidder who has a 2.30 GAA and a .935 SAV%.
