Wednesday Preview: BSU & UST in action

Two games on the docket in the CCHA this Wednesday night, featuring No. 20 Bemidji State at Arizona State and St. Thomas hosting Penn State. St. Thomas wraps up the two-game series against the Nittany Lions at 7:07 p.m. CT at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn. Bemidji State will face Arizona State tonight and Friday at 7:05 p.m. MT at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe, Ariz.

The Beavers (7-5-0) and Sun Devils (6-6-0) meet for just the second-ever series between the teams. The Sun Devils skated into Bemidji, Minn. Jan. 15-16 of its inaugural season--2015-16. BSU swept the series (5-0 and 2-0), posting back-to-back shutouts. Despite being unbeaten in the series, Bemidji State has never traveled to Tempe or played in Oceanside Arena--a place where ASU is 5-1-0 this season.  Owen Sillinger leads the Beavers in scoring through 12 games.  He is tied with Tyler Kirkup for the team’s goal-scoring lead with six, while he has a team-best 10 assists for 16 points. His 1.33 points per game place him 18th among all NCAA Division I skaters.

This weekend marks the first-ever meeting between Penn State and St. Thomas. Despite St. Thomas scoring first Friday, Penn State finished with a 5-1 road win at St. Thomas. Trevor Ledonne scored the lone goal for the Tommies.

Kyler Grundy leads St. Thomas goal scorers with four. Christiano Versich, Luke Manning and Grant Loven have scored three apiece. Trevor Zins, Matthew Jennings and Cameron Recchi have chipped in two each. Those seven players have contributed 19 of the Tommies’ 23 season goals.Â
