CCHA Weekend Preview: Jan. 7-8

Week 14 in the CCHA features seven of eight clubs on the ice, with number 20-ranked Michigan Tech being the lone team to have the weekend off. Number one-ranked Minnesota State will host Ferris State, Bemidji State welcomes Lake Superior State, Bowling Green travels to St. Thomas, while Northern Michigan hosts Colgate in non-conference action.

Bemidji State faces Lake Superior State for the second time this season after meeting earlier Nov. 12-13 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Beavers swept the Lakers in their previous series outscoring them 9-6 in the series. Bemidji State earned a 5-4 victory in game one and then completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory the next night. In the all-time series, Lake Superior State holds a 36-35-6 (.507) edge over the Beavers but BSU is 3-2-0 in its last five games versus the Lakers.

In a series that dates back to the 1992-93 season, Minnesota State stands 30-9-2 all-time in games vs. Ferris State.  The Mavericks and the Bulldogs split a two-game series earlier this season in Big Rapids, Mich., with FSU claiming a 2-1 win Nov. 5 and Minnesota State responding with a 5-1 win Nov. 6.  The Mavericks, who are 9-1-0 vs. the Bulldogs in the last 10 meetings, are 16-1-1 in games vs. Ferris State played at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.



 

Bowling Green at St. Thomas

For the first time in program history, the Bowling Green Falcons will travel to Minnesota for a series against the St. Thomas Tommies. In the first-ever series between the teams, Bowling Green swept St. Thomas in the Slater Family Ice Arena. BGSU won 4-2 on the first night and 3-0 on the second, giving them the 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series. This series marks the first conference competition for either team in nearly a month.
 

 

Colgate at Northern Michigan

This will be the Wildcats' first time hosting the Raiders in Marquette. The two teams have previously met at the Phoenix Mutual Hockey Tournament in 1985. NMU took the game by a score of 4-1 en route to the holiday tournament championship where they defeated Yale, 5-4.

Hank Crone owns 22 assists in 19 games played for a national best. His 29 points also leads the world of DI collegiate hockey with seven goals and 22 assists. Averaging 1.53 points per game, Crone leads the nation in the category. His linemate AJ Vanderbeck's 1.21 average is 22nd overall. With 63 blocks in 19 games played, Ben Newhouse leads the nation in the category. Fellow Wildcat blue liner Mike Van Unen sits in eighth nationally with 39 blocks.
