Weekend Preview: Non-League Opportunities

With seven CCHA teams in action, there are a number intriguing match-ups to follow throughout the weekend. Bowling Green and No. 18 Western Michigan open up a home-and-home series on Thursday night, before No. 20 Northern Michigan and No. 14 Notre Dame kick-off a Friday-Sunday series in South Bend. No. 5 Minnesota State continues its early season gauntlet with a home two-game set against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth.

The Falcons, who split with Michigan State last weekend, play another home-and-home series this weekend when they battle 18th-ranked Western Michigan on Thursday and Friday. Bowling Green received great goaltending from both CCHA Goaltender of the Week Zack Rose and Christian Stoever last week and will look for more of the same against the Broncos. The Falcons lead the all-time series 82-60-9, including a 4-1-0 mark over the last five meetings.

The Huskies get their first full weekend of action underway on Thursday night, when they open up a two-game series at Alaska. Michigan Tech, who fell at Ferris State, 2-1, in their only regular season game so far, looks for its first victory against the Nanooks, who split with St. Thomas last weekend. The Huskies own a 21-6-0 lead in the all-time series, including 9-2-0 in Fairbanks.

Ferris State continues its season-long six-game homestand this weekend against Canisius College. The Bulldogs topped Michigan Tech (2-1) last Friday, before falling to No. 18 Western Michigan (6-4). CCHA Rookie of the Week Connor McGrath will look to back up his three-point weekend (2 goals, 1 assist) with another strong showing against the Golden Griffins. The all-time series between the two programs is split, 3-3-0, with the Bulldogs winning the most recent meeting, 4-2, on October 30, 2021, in Buffalo.

Lake Superior State welcomes the Mavericks to Sault Ste, Marie for its home-opening weekend. The Lakers went 1-2-0 in exhibition play, scoring 10 goals in the process. Nebraska Omaha, which opened its season with a pair of 4-3 losses at home to Niagara, holds a 17-10-5 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 2000.

The Wildcats, who climbed into the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll at No. 20 this week, visit No. 13/14 Notre Dame for a two-game series this weekend. Northern Michigan swept Colgate last (3-2 and 4-1) behind another strong offensive showing from senior captain AJ Vanderbeck (2 goals, 1 assist) and a solid debut in goal from Beni Halasz (28 saves on Saturday). The Fighting Irish hold a 25-21-8 edge in the all-time series, including a 12-11-4 mark in South Bend.

Coming off a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 2 Minnesota last Saturday, the Mavericks welcome another in-state power to Mankato this weekend, when No. 4 Minnesota Duluth comes to town for a two-game set. Minnesota State received contributions all over the ice last week, including from CCHA Defenseman of the Week Jake Livingstone, who had a goal and an assist. The Bulldogs, who swept Arizona State two weeks ago, bring a 29-24-6 all-time series lead into the matchup.

The Tommies conclude their five-game in-state start to the season with an exhibition game against the United State National Team Development Program Under-18 Team on Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena. St. Thomas picked up its first win of the year, 3-2 in overtime, against Alaska last Saturday and looks to continue its success against the best the nation has to offer at the Under-18 level.Â
