Saturday Review: Beavers Jump In Front

Bemidji State picked up a shootout win to cap a five-point weekend against Michigan Tech after the Huskies battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period in the lone CCHA game of the night. Three other conference teams were in action, but victories were hard to come by on this Saturday night.

The fifth-ranked Wolverines scored in every period to top the Lakers on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena. Timo Bakos scored a highligh-reel goal for the hosts, with assists going to Jared 
Westcott and Jared Kucharek. Seth Eisele turned away 33 shots in net for Lake Superior State.

The Beavers built a 2-0 lead after two thanks to tallies from Mitchell Martan and Lleyton Roed, but the Huskies stormed back in the third, getting the first two collegiate goals from Kyle Kukkonen to pull even and send the game to overtime. After a scoreless 3-on-3 session, Bemidji State was able to outlast Tech in a shootout, with Michigan Tech ringing the iron in the final round.

Another back-and-forth match-up of top-10 teams finished with Grant Cruikshank scoring the even game-winning goal with under four minutes to play in the third period - his second goal of the game. The Huskies built a 3-1 lead midway through the contest, but the Mavericks climbed back before the end of the second when Josh Groll whipped home his third of the season. Sam Morton then tied the game in the third with a great individual effort, netting his fifth goal of the year, while extending his goal-scoring streak to four games.
