Friday Recap: Bemidji Defends Home Ice

Bemidji State opened its home-and-home series with No. 2 St. Cloud State with a bang, handing the Huskies their first defeat of the year, 3-1, at Sanford Center. Elsewhere in the CCHA, three games went to overtime, including both conference matchups. Ferris State edged St. Thomas at home, 3-2, while No. 8 Minnesota State was able to fend off a last push from Bowling Green to take a, 3-2, decision in their first conference action of the year.

Freshman Connor McGrath scored 2:27 into overtime to lift the homestanding Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory over St. Thomas in the CCHA opener for both teams. The Tommies led after one period, before falling behind by a goal (2-1) after two. They tied the game in the third on a rebound goal from Josh Eernisse to force the extra session.

A game which saw both teams generate chances early turned into a route for the hosts. The Huskies outshot the Saints, 37-18, and went 3 for 5 on the power play. Michigan Tech had five players record multiple points, including Parker Saretsky, who had a goal and two assists.

The Lakes mounted a late comeback, including a tying goal with just one second on the clock, before falling to the visiting Golden Knights in overtime. Brandon Puricelli (1 goal, 2 assists) paced the hosts with three points, while Connor Milburn (1 goal, 1 assist) had a pair.

After conceding an early power play goal the previously unbeaten Huskies, Bemidji took the lead for good late in the second period, scoring twice in 1:26. The Beavers limited St. Cloud State to just 18 shots.


 

Alaska 2, Northern Michigan 1

Freshman Joey Larson tied the game in the third period for Northern Michigan, but Alaska answered with 3:30 left in the contest and held on for the series-opening victory. Beni Halasz made 20 saves for the hosts, while the Nanooks' Matt Koethe netted the eventual winning tally.

The Falcons climbed out of a 2-0 hole to force overtime in Mankato, but Minnesota State captain Brendan Furry was able to snap home his first goal of the year in the extra frame to give the hosts the second point in the conference standings. Bowling Green has collected at least one point in each of its three CCHA games.
