Weekend Preview: Marquee Matchups

All eight CCHA teams will be in action this weekend over 12 regular season contests and two exhibitions. No. 5 Minnesota State opens regular season action against No. 2 Minnesota in a home-and-home series, while No. 20 Michigan Tech and Ferris State meet in a non-league contest on Friday night, before the Bulldogs host No. 18 Western Michigan on Saturday. Bowling Green and Michigan State play a home-and-home, Bemidji State welcomes Arizona State to town for pair and St. Thomas hosts Alaska for two. Northern Michigan heads east to face Colgate in a two-game set.
 
Eight of the 14 games will be available on CCHA TV, by visiting FloHockey. Two can be seen on ESPN+, two on BTN+, two on HockeyTV and one on Bally Sports North.

The Wildcats picked up a pair of CCHA points last weekend at home against Bowling Green and hit the road for the first time in 2022-23, when they visit Colgate on Friday (7pm ET) and Saturday (4pm ET). Aiden Gallacher (Defenseman) and Joey Larson (Rookie) claimed weekly awards last week, while senior captain AJ Vanderbeck also stood out, picking up two goals, including the overtime-winner on Sunday. Northern is 3-0 all-time against Colgate, including a home sweep of the Raiders last season.

The Falcons, who sit atop the CCHA standings with four points through two games, head to East Lansing, Mich., for the opener of a home-and-home series with Michigan State on Friday night (7pm ET). The series turns to Slater Family Ice Center on Saturday (7:07pm) and the home opener for Bowling Green. Sophomore Austen Swankler, who was named CCHA Player of the Week, looks continue his hot start against the Spartans, who own a 74-32-9 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1971.

Lake Superior plays its third and final exhibition game of the season on Friday night in Plymouth, Mich., against the United States National Development Team Program (7pm ET). The Lakers bounced back from an exhibition defeat to No. 20 Michigan Tech on Saturday, 5-2. to beat Nipissing University on Sunday, 6-1. The Lakers are 3-2 in the all-time series with the USNTDP Under-18 team.

Coming off a pair of convincing exhibition victories, 20th-ranked Michigan Tech visits Ferris State in a non-league matchup at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. on Friday night (7:07pm). The Bulldogs, who are home for the first time this season, picked up a tie (2-2) and a loss (4-1) at Miami last weekend. Junior netminder Logan Stein earned CCHA Goaltender of the Week honors after making 33 saves and aided Ferris State to a shootout triumph in the opener.

Instate-rivals No. 5 Minnesota State and No. 2 Minnesota get the season off to a fast start with a non-league, home-and-home series, which begins on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci (7pm CT). On Saturday, the series heads to Mankato and Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center (6:07pm ET). The Gophers own a 38-18-6 lead in the all-time series, but the Mavericks have won four straight and eight of the last 10.

Bemidji State gets its 2022-23 season underway this weekend, when it welcomes Arizona State to town for a two-game series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07pm CT on Friday and 6:07pm CT on Saturday at Sanford Center. The Beavers are 3-1 all-time against the Sun Devils, including a split in Tempe, Ariz. last season.

The Tommies continue their run of four home games out of five this weekend, when they host Alaska for a two-game series at St. Thomas Ice Arena. The series between the unbeaten Nanooks and St. Thomas opens on Friday night (7:07pm CT) and concludes on Saturday (6:07pm ET). Alaska won both meetings last year in Fairbanks by scores of 6-1 and 7-3. The Tommies dropped a pair of tight non-league games to then-No. 13 St. Cloud State last weekend.
