Weekend Preview: All Systems Go

The first weekend of full CCHA play gets underway on Friday with three one-way series and a home-and-home. No. 6 Minnesota State, No. 20 Bemidji State and Bowling Green enter play in a three-way tie for first place with five points apiece and are all hosting at least one game this weekend. The Mavericks open a home-and-home with St. Thomas on the road Friday, while the Beavers and Falcons host Ferris State and Michigan Tech, respectively, for a pair. Lake Superior State welcomes U.P.-rival Northern Michigan to Taffy Abel Arena for two.

The sixth-ranked Mavericks travel to Mendota Heights to open this weekend's home-and-home series with St. Thomas on Friday night. The series shifts to Mankato on Saturday. Minnesota State swept the four-game season series a year ago, including a 7-1 win on January 20 for Hockey Day in Minnesota. The Mavs hold a 22-9-2 edge in the all-time series, dating back to 1971.

Bemidji State jumped into the USCHO top 20 this week at No. 20 and hosts Ferris State for a pair this weekend at Sanford Center. The two teams will meet for the 40th time on Friday, with the Bulldogs holding a narrow 18-16-5 edge in the all-time series. Ferris State's Connor McGrath (4 goals, 2 assists) and Bemidji State's Lleyton Roed (3 goals, 1 assist) are 1-2 among CCHA rookie goal-scorers.

The Wildcats return to conference play for the first time since their opening weekend split with Bowling Green, while Lake Superior State is the last time to open their conference slate. The Cappo Cup combatants have met 143 times previously with the Wildcats leading, 78-52-13. Northern Michigan boasts the CCHA Forward and Rookie of the Month recipients in AJ Vanderbeck and Beni Halasz, respectively.

Michigan Tech heads south to face a Bowling Green squad that has taken at least one point from three of the team's four conference games thus far, including an overtime loss at then-No. 8 Minnesota State last weekend. The Huskies, who are backstopped by CCHA Goaltender of the Month, Blake Pietila, have not allowed a goal in 148:22 minutes heading into Friday's series opener.
