CCHA Players of the Week: Mar 4-6

The CCHA is proud to recognize four student-athletes and its Players of the Week for the games of Mar. 4-6. Bemidji State's Will Zmolek (Defenseman), Bowling Green's Ben Wozney (Rookie), Michigan Tech's Blake Pietila (Goaltender) and Minnesota State's Sam Morton (Forward) took home this week’s honors.

CCHA Forward of the Week: Sam Morton, Jr., Minnesota State (Lafayette, Colo.)

Minnesota State junior forward Sam Morton had five points in two games as Minnesota State claimed a first-round series win over St. Thomas in CCHA quarterfinal action last weekend. Morton scored twice in Minnesota State's 3-2 win Friday followed by a goal and two assists in Saturday's 8-2 victory. Morton also recorded 11 shots on goal, a plus-4 rating and one blocked shot.

 

CCHA Defenseman of the Week: Will Zmolek, Jr., Bemidji State (Rochester, Minn.)

Bemidji State junior defenseman Will Zmolek tied for the team lead among defensemen with two points off of two assists in the CCHA Mason Cup Playoffs quarterfinals this past weekend. Zmolek earned both assists in Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Falcons including assisting on the game-winning goal. He led all skaters by going +6 on the ice over the weekend and blocked a team-high six shots.

 

CCHA Goaltender of the Week: Blake Pietila, Jr., Michigan Tech (Howell, Mich.)

Michigan Tech junior goaltender Blake Pietila backstopped the Huskies to a CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinal sweep of Ferris State over the weekend. He made 15 saves Friday and 32 saves Saturday for a .922 save percentage and a 1.61 goals-against average. Pietila has is 21-11-2 this season with a 1.85 goals-against average and a .920 sav percentage.

 

CCHA Rookie of the Week: Ben Wozney, Fr., Bowling Green (Richmond, B.C.)

Bowling Green freshman defenseman Ben Wozney notched two assists for the Bowling Green Falcons in their series against Bemidji State. On Saturday, he earned the secondary assist on a Sam Craggs goal. Wozney made a spectacular diving block in front of the net, deflecting the puck to Craggs, who went back-and-forth with Taylor Schneider before scoring his second goal of the night. On Sunday, Wozney earned the primary assist on the Falcons' lone goal, putting a perfect pass on Evan Dougherty in front of the net. Wozney also led the Orange and Brown with five blocked shots in the series.
