X-citing Weekend in the CCHA

CCHA fans have plenty to be excited for this weekend, with the entire league in action. St. Thomas battles No. 1/2 Minnesota for the first time in program history, starting on Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, while Bemidji State hosts the Ice Breaker Tournament.

Ferris State, Minnesota State and Northern Michigan all face-off with NCHC opposition, while No. 9 Michigan Tech welcomes Alaska to town for two. Lake Superior State is also home for the first time against Alaska Anchorage. Last, but certainly not least, Augustana opens its home inaugural home schedule against future conference foe Bowling Green.
 
Twelve of this weekend's games will be available on CCHA TV, by visiting FloHockey. Three are available via NCHC.tv and one will be on B1G+. Several contests will be televised locally, including both St. Thomas contests.

Ferris State gets the weekend underway with a Thursday-Friday, home-and-home series with nationally-ranked Western Michigan, beginning in Kalamazoo. The two programs have met over 150 times in series history with the Broncos holding an 87-52-13 edge. The Bulldogs did win 6-2 at home last October.

Nationally-ranked Michigan Tech begins its home schedule against Alaska this weekend. The Huskies are 23-6-0 against the Nanooks, including a sweep in Fairbanks last year. Both teams are looking for their first victory of this season.

The Lakers are home for the first time in 2023-24 and welcome Alaska Anchorage to Taffy Abel Arena for a pair. Lake Superior State is 16-8-2 overall against the Seawolves all-time, including a 3-3 tie in the most recent meeting in January of 2020. Anchorage earned an impressive win against UMass last weekend, while the Lakers dropped a pair to then-No. 9 Michigan State.

The Beavers welcome Wisconsin and Army to town as part of a split-site Ice Breaker on Friday and Saturday. The Beavers dropped an exhibition game at nationally-ranked Minnesota last week, while Wisconsin earned a sweep of NCAA newcomer Augustana. Army dropped a 6-0 decision at home to Union on Sunday. The Black Knights visit No. 7 North Dakota on Friday, before facing Bemidji State on Saturday.

The first meeting between St. Thomas and No. 1/2 Minnesota in 96 years will take place at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday night as part of a doubleheader that also features the Tommies and Gophers women's hockey programs. The men's series shifts to 3M Arena at Mariucci on Saturday, with both contests airing locally on Fox 9+ and Fox, respectively.

Minnesota State gets its regular season underway at home against No. 10 St. Cloud State this weekend. A rematch of last year's NCAA Regional in Fargo that was won by the Huskies, 4-0, the Mavericks look to defend home ice in the debut of head coach Luke Strand. The all-time series is currently tied at 61-61-13 over the 135 meetings. St. Cloud State has won 9 of 10 and is 32-19-6 since both programs moved to Division I.

The Wildcats bring high hopes into the 2023-24 campaign and get an early test with a trip to No. 17 Minnesota Duluth. Preseason All-CCHA skaters Andre Ghantous and Josh Zinger lead Northern into a season in which Northern was picked to finish second in the league by both the coaches and media polls. NMU and UND have split their previous six meetings, but the Wildcats swept the most recent meetings, 5-4 and 5-2 in December of 2021 in Marquette.

Bowling Green is the first CCHA team to face Augustana, coming off a split with Robert Morris last weekend. Christian Stoever earned his third career shutout on Friday, helping him earn CCHA Goaltender of the Week. The Vikings have plenty of festivities planned for their inaugural home series. AU dropped a pair on the road to Wisconsin last weekend, but hung with the Badgers throughout.Â
