Weekend Preview: In With the New

Eight CCHA teams, including Division I newcomer Augustana University, are in action on opening weekend across NCAA Division I Men's Hockey, including a number of intriguing series and single contests. St. Thomas embarks on a challenging early-season slate, with a home-and-home with No. 8 St. Cloud State, while No. 10 Michigan Tech visits No. 17 Minnesota Duluth for the Hall of Fame Game on Saturday.

The Vikings and Lake Superior State travel to Wisconsin and No. 9 Michigan State, respectively, and Ferris State welcomes Miami to town for a two-game set. Bowling Green and Robert Morris square off in a home-and-home, while Minnesota State and Bemidji State ease into 2023-24 with exhibition matchups against Nebraska Omaha and No. 3 Minnesota.

The Lakers begin 2023-24 with a tough test at nationally-ranked Michigan State this weekend. A pair of afternoon games against their in-state rivals is followed by a home series next weekend. The Spartans hold a 78-38-14 lead in the all-time series. Lake Superior State head coach Damon Whitten and associate head coach Mike York are graduates of MSU.

The Falcons welcome RMU back to Division I hockey after the program was shut down following the 2020-21 season. Bowling Green owns a 5-1-1 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 2013-14. The home-and-home series opens in Pittsburgh on Saturday, before BGSU's home opener on Sunday at the Slate.

One of the marquee matchups of opening weekend pits nationally-ranked Michigan Tech and Minnesota Duluth in the Hall of Fame Game on Saturday. Tech holds a 121-91-20 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1952. The former WCHA foes last met in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, with the Bulldogs taking home a 2-0 victory.

The Tommies look to build on their impressive 2022-23 season with a tough string of games out of the gate in 2023-24. The two teams have met in each of the last two seasons, with the Huskies coming away with victories in all four contests to date. Saturday's clash will take place at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, before the weekend series shifts to Mendota Heights on Sunday afternoon.

Augie Hockey is here! The Vikings travel to Big Ten country for their inaugural series this weekend, taking on Wisconsin for two. Twenty-seven student-athletes make up the roster for Augustana, including 10 freshmen, 15 transfers and two early enrollments. The Vikings are scheduled to open their brand-new Midco Arena in late January.

Rivals Ferris State and Miami open the 2023-24 in Big Rapids this weekend for a two-game set. The Redhawks lead the all-time series 48-45-17, including a 1-1-0 mark to open last season in Oxford. The Bulldogs finished 2023-24 strong, winning a road series in the Mason Cup playoffs and return a number of key contributors, including both goaltenders.

Head coach Luke Strand makes his unofficial debut behind the bench for Minnesota State, which hosts the UNO Mavericks on Saturday in an exhibition contest. MSU is 20-15-5 against Nebraska Omaha in the all-time series. UNO won last year's exhibition match-up, 7-2, at home.

The Beavers battle No. 3 Minnesota in exhibition play on Sunday at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The two programs met in a mid-season exhibition at Sanford Center last year, with the Gophers coming away with a 2-1 win. In official competition, Minnesota owns a 20-2-1 lead in the all-time series, with BSU last win coming at the 2016 North Star College Cup.
