Weekend Preview: Rinking in 2024

CCHA teams will play 12 games in five different states over the next four days, including four tournament contests. Michigan Tech and Ferris State take part in the Great Lakes Invitational against Alaska and No. 7 Michigan State, respectively, while Lake Superior State heads to the Ledyard Bank Classic, hosted by Dartmouth. Elsewhere, St. Thomas visits Vermont for a two-game series and Bemidji State battles No. 14 St. Cloud State in a home-and-home. Closing out the weekend, Augustana heads to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame. Bowling Green will host Windsor (Ont.) in an exhibition game on Saturday.

Great Lakes Invitational host host Michigan Tech opens the tournament against Alaska on Thursday afternoon at Van Andel Arena. The Huskies are 23-7-1 all-time against the Nanooks, dating back to 1990. The winner of Thursday's matchup will face the winner of No. 7 Michigan State and Ferris State on Friday night.

The Bulldogs take on No. 14 Michigan State in the second game of the Great Lakes Invitational on Thursday in Grand Rapids. Sparty leads the all-time series by a 77-39-15 margin, but Ferris State took home a 4-2 victory in this matchup a season ago. The winner moves on to Friday's championship game against either Michigan Tech or Alaska.

Bemidji State hosts No. 14 St. Cloud State on Friday night, before heading to St. Cloud on Sunday afternoon to complete the home-and-home series. The Huskies lead the all-time series 51-46-8, dating back to 1948. The Beavers are without freshmen Eric Pohlkamp and Kasper Magnusson, who are playing for the United States and Denmark, respectively, at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Sweden.

The Tommies head east to face the Catamounts for the first time in program history on Friday and Saturday. St. Thomas split a home-and-home with Minnesota State its last time out and will look to improve upon its 2-3-1 non-league mark at historic Gutterson Arena. Vermont brings a season-long, three-game winning streak into Friday's action, including a sweep of Long Island University on December 16 and 17.

The Lakers will be the first Michigan school to play in the Ledyard Bank Classic, when they take the ice against the host Big Green on Friday night. Lake Superior State has won two straight games entering the weekend by scores of 6-1 and 5-1 - both in conference play. The winner of Friday night's game will face either No. 8 Maine or No. 18/19 RIT on Saturday.

The Vikings return from break to face Notre Dame in a two-game road series. Augustana earned a hard-fought split at Alaska last time out, falling in the first game of the weekend, 5-2, before bouncing back to win, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday. Notre Dame has lost 5-of-6 games, but the competition has been stiff, falling to the likes of No. 9 Minnesota, No. 1 Boston College, No. 15 Michigan and No. 7 Michigan State.
