Weekend Preview: Horse Race

With three weeks to play, it's anyone's guess who will take home the MacNaughton Cup in 2023. No. 14 Minnesota State, which is idle this weekend, holds a one-point lead on No. 12 Michigan Tech, which hosts Bowling Green for two. In the just as tight home ice race, Bemidji State visits Ferris State this weekend, leading the Bulldogs by a single point. St. Thomas and Northern Michigan get together in Mendota Heights, Minn., with both teams clinging to home hopes.

A series that can go a long way to deciding seeding and the MacNaughton Cup, Bowling Green and No. 12 Michigan Tech meet for Carnival in Houghton this weekend. The two teams split their previous series in Bowling Green, but the Huskies are looking for more than that this time around to keep pace with idle Minnesota State. The Falcons can lock up home ice this weekend, but need a lot of help to do so.

Bemidji State and Ferris State enter this weekend's series separated by just a single point in the battle for the fourth and final home ice position in the Mason Cup Playoffs. The previous meeting in Bemidji could not have been much tighter, with both games reaching overtime and one going to a shootout. A playoff atmosphere is expected in Big Rapids all weekend.

Two more teams separated by one point in the standings, St. Thomas hosts Northern Michigan for two in Mendota Heights for the only meeting of the regular season. The Wildcats won 4-1 and 8-3 last year in Marquette, but the Tommies have already beaten three top-four CCHA teams in the second half.
