Mason Cup Quarterfinal Preview

The 2023 Mason Cup Playoffs get underway this weekend with four best-of-three series in the quarterfinal round. Eighth-seed Lake Superior State visits top-seed Minnesota State, fifth-seed Bemidji State travels to fourth-seed Northern Michigan, sixth-seed Ferris State heads to third-seed Bowling Green and seventh-seed St. Thomas makes the trek to second-seed Michigan Tech.

No. 13 Minnesota State sets out to defend its Mason Cup title from 2022 this weekend with a quarterfinal match-up against Lake Superior State. The Mavericks are 28-4-1 all-time against the Lakers, including wins of 3-2 (overtime) and 3-1 this season. Lake Superior State has just two victories (2-15-1) in Mankato, most recently in 2019.

Northern Michigan used a 6-2-0 month of February to climb all the way to the fourth and final home ice position in the CCHA over the final weekend of regular season action. Bemidji State now heads to Marquette for its first ever road postseason series against the Wildcats and their second ever playoff meeting (2016-17). The two teams split their regular season meetings, 2-2, with each team picking up a win in both weekends.

Fresh off taking 5-of-6 points from Bowling Green in a regular season series on February 3 and 4, Ferris State heads back to Ohio for the opening round the Mason Cup Playoffs. The Falcons boast the conference's scoring leader in Austen Swankler, who has 42 points so far this season. Bowling Green also holds an edge in the all-time series at 79-64-14.

St. Thomas and No. 11 Michigan Tech square off in the quarterfinal round of the Mason Cup Playoffs after the Huskies went 3-1-0 in the regular season series. The lone Tommies victory did come in the most recent meeting, however, helping St. Thomas to a split on January 13 and 14 in Houghton. Huskies senior Blake Pietila has now claimed three CCHA Goaltender of the Month awards after taking home February honors and is two victories shy of the program's all-time record.
