Weekend Preview: Old Friends

Six CCHA teams are in action this weekend, including several matchups between former league foes. No. 20 Minnesota State hosts No. 5 North Dakota for a pair, while Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State welcome Alaska Anchorage and Stonehill to their respective barns. 

Bowling Green travels to No. 16/17 Western Michigan and RIT on Thursday and Saturday, while Ferris State visits St. Lawrence out of ECAC Hockey. Augustana hits the road for the first time in the regular season with a trip to No. 12 Nebraska Omaha.

The Falcons hit the road for the second time on the young season, visiting No. 16/17 Western Michigan on Thursday and RIT on Saturday. Bowling Green is 82-64-9 all-time against their former conference opponent, dating back to 1969. The Broncos swept a home-and-home series last year by matching 5-2 scores. BGSU is 5-1-1 all-time against RIT, but the Tigers won the most recent meeting (3-2 in OT) on October 11, 2019.

Ferris State heads to New York for a non-league series against St. Lawrence this weekend, looking for its first victory of the season on Friday night. The Bulldogs are 9-5-0 all-time against the Saints, dating back to 1993. Each team picked up a win last year in a split in Big Rapids. St. Lawrence has yet to play outside of Appleton Arena so far this season and that continues against FSU.

The first-ever meeting between newly elevated Stonehill College and Lake Superior State gets underway on Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena. The Skyhawks claimed their first victory of the year over Merrimack on October 6, but are coming off a pair of losses last week. The Lakers had a successful exhibition weekend last week, topping the USNTDP Under-18s, 6-1, before topping Simon Fraser, 4-1.

A battle of top-20, former WCHA foes is on tap this weekend in Mankato. UND leads the all-time series 40-13-9, dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Mavericks managed a tie after falling in game one of last year's series in Grand Forks and climbed into the polls with a season-opening victory over Michigan. Minnesota State is in the midst of a six-game homestand, which concludes next weekend against No. 12 UNO.

The Vikings visit nationally-ranked Omaha for a two-game set this weekend. The Mavericks swept a home-and-home series last year, 5-2 and 2-1, which are the only two meetings between the two programs to date. Augustana split a home series with LIU last weekend, while UNO claimed the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament with victories over No. 14 UMass (3-2 in OT) and No. 5 Minnesota (2-1 in OT).

Northern Michigan opens its home schedule against Alaska Anchorage, renewing a series in which the Wildcats lead 18-4-0 all-time. The Seawolves were able to salvage a split from their last trip to Marquette in 2022, winning 3-1, after Northern Michigan claimed a 9-1 victory in the series opener. NMU took nationally-ranked Colorado College to overtime last Friday, before dropping the series finale. Anchorage have opened their 2024-25 campaign against No. 1 Denver and Miami (OH), falling in all four contests.
