Weekend Preview: Second Season

The Mason Cup Playoffs get underway on Friday night with the top four seeds in the CCHA hosting the bottom four. MacNaughton Cup Champions Bemidji State welcomes eighth-seed Ferris State to town, while second-seed St. Thomas faces seventh-seed Lake Superior State. Third-seed Michigan Tech tangles with sixth-seed Bowling Green and four-seed Minnesota State rounds out the weekend by playing host to fifth-seed Northern Michigan.

Augustana, which concluded its regular season last weekend, hosts the United States National Team Development Program on Friday and Saturday.

Fresh off its MacNaughton Cup victory, the Beavers host Ferris State for a best-of-three series, starting Friday night at Sanford Center. The Beavers took 3-of-4 meetings this season, including a 3-2 overtime victory and a 4-1 win in Bemidji in mid-February. BSU enters the posteason on an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1), while the Bulldogs are 0-6-1 in their last seven.

The Tommies host their first-ever Mason Cup Playoff series this weekend when Lake Superior State comes to town for a best-of-three set. St. Thomas got the split it needed last week to earn home ice and takes on a Lakers team that earned a split in Mendota Heights, in the only meeting between the two programs, in late November. The all-time has been just as close, split 5-5-0 in 10 contests. The Tommies snapped a six-game winless streak last Friday with their 2-0 shutout at Michigan Tech, while LSSU enters the playoffs on a 3-2-0 run over its last five.

Not long removed from outscoring the Falcons, 10-1, in a road sweep, Michigan Tech is home for a best-of-three Quarterfinal series this weekend. Bowling Green was able to claim a victory in Houghton earlier this, winning in overtime (2-1) on December 1. The Huskies have outscored BGSU 14-5 and have evened the all-time series 25-25-5 in the process. Tech is 3-1-0 in its last four games, while the Falcons have followed a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) with a four-game skid to close out the regular season.

In a rematch of the 2023 Mason Cup Championship Game, Northern Michigan looks to avenge the Mavericks' late-game comeback this weekend in Mankato. The two teams squared off only once during the regular season, with Minnesota State going 1-0-1, with a shootout win to take 4-of-6 points in late January. The Wildcats carry a season-long, five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) into the postseason, while the Mavericks are 2-4-0 over their last three weekends.
