Weekend Preview: Talking About Playoffs

The 2025 Mason Cup Playoffs open this weekend with four best-of-three quarterfinal series, hosted by the top finishers during the 2024-25 regular season. The top-seed and No. 14/16 Minnesota State welcomes 8th-seed Lake Superior State to Mankato, while 2nd-seed Augustana hosts 7th-seed Bemidji State. Defending Mason Cup Champions and 5th-seed Michigan Tech heads to 4th-seed Bowling Green and 6th-seed Ferris State visits 3rd-seed St. Thomas.

Tech visits Slater Family Ice Arena in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal matchup, which the Huskies swept in Houghton by scores of 5-0 and 6-5. In their only meeting this season, Michigan Tech claimed a 3-0 road win on November 29, before the Falcons took a shootout victory the next night, following a 2-2 tie. Tech owns a narrow 28-25-6 lead in the all-time series.

The hard-charging Tommies welcome Ferris State to town for a best-of-three Mason Cup Quarterfinal series this weekend, looking for redemption from a three-game series defeat last year at the hands of Lake Superior State. St. Thomas used a sweep of Michigan Tech last year to climb into the top four in the CCHA and earn home ice, while the Bulldogs used some late-game heroics on Saturday against Northern Michigan to move to sixth. The Tommies own a 7-5-0 edge in the all-time series.

After a week off, Augustana hosts Bemidji State in its first-ever playoff appearance this weekend at Midco Arena. The Vikings, who flirted with the national polls throughout the season, split their previous meeting with the Beavers this season, losing 4-3 in overtime, before responding with a 5-1 win the next night. Bemidji State saw its five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) snapped on the final game of the regular season at No. 14 Minnesota State, while Augie is looking for its first victory since February 14 against Michigan Tech.

The Mavericks welcome Lake Superior State to Mankato for a best-of-three Mason Cup Quarterfinal series this weekend. Minnesota State swept the season series, winning 2-1 and 3-2 (in overtime) at home in December, before claiming 4-0 and 4-1 victories just two weeks ago in Saute Ste. Marie. The Mavericks take a 36-5-2 all-time series lead into the weekend.
