Weekend Preview: For the Cup

The 2026 Mason Cup Championship Game between top-seed Minnesota State and second-seed St. Thomas is a rematch of last year's title game,which the Mavericks claimed by a 4-2 score. The Tommies, which fell one point short in the race for the MacNaughton Cup are in search of the program's first-ever Division I league championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, while Minnesota State can clinch their seventh DI playoff title (fourth CCHA) and 11th NCAA berth with a win.

St. Thomas and Minnesota State clash for the fourth time this season in the 2026 Mason Cup Championship Game on Friday night in Mankato. The Tommies topped Augustana, 2-1, in their semifinal matchup last Saturday, while the Mavericks took care of Michigan Tech, 7-2. MSU leads the all-time series, 31-13-2, dating back to 1975. Over the last 10 meetings, the Mavericks own a narrow 5-4-1 advantage, with the Tommies taking 2-of-3 during the regular season. 

Minnesota State has won three of the four Mason Cup titles since the CCHA was reconstituted for the 2021-22 season, with Michigan Tech (2024) being the lone winner outside of Mankato. The Tommies won 12 MIAC (Division III) conference tournaments, most recently in 2020.
