Weekend Preview: Playing for Points

Conference play begins this weekend with six teams playing for points in the CCHA standings. Bemidji State welcomes Augustana to town for two, while Michigan Tech opens its home schedule against Ferris State and Lake Superior State hosts Bowling Green.

In non-league action, St. Thomas opens Lee & Penny Anderson Arena with a two-game set against No. 15 Providence, while No. 20 Minnesota State hosts RPI and Northern Michigan takes on No. 1 Michigan State at Berry Events Center.

Northern Michigan closes out its non-conference schedule against nationally first-ranked Michigan State at Berry Events Center this weekend. The Spartans are coming off a sweep of previously No. 1 Boston University, while the Wildcats dropped a pair to then-No. 19/20 Colorado College last weekend. Michigan State owns a 38-32-4 lead in the all-time series, including a 2-0 victory in the most recent meeting at the 2024 Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Michigan Tech and Ferris State get their respectively conference schedules underway this weekend in Houghton, Mich. The Huskies split at Alaska last weekend, while the Bulldogs won a pair of exhibition games against the USNTDP Under-18 Team an Simon Fraser. Tech owns a 35-19-3 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1982. The Huskies are also 18-8-1 against the Bulldogs at home.

The Lakers welcome Bowling Green to Taffy Abel Arena to get CCHA play underway. Lake Superior State bounced back from being swept at home by Lindenwood last weekend, picking up a pair of exhibition wins over Simon Fraser and the USNTDP Under-18 Team in Plymouth, Mich. The Falcons also picked up an exhibition win, topping Windsor, 6-3, at home on Friday. The two programs meet for the 195th and 196th time this weekend.

Bemidji State hosts Augustana for a two-game CCHA series this weekend at Sanford Center. The Vikings' most common opponent in the league through two seasons, BSU owns a narrow 4-3-0 edge in the all-time series, which includes a 2025 Mason Cup First Round series win last year in Sioux Falls, S.D. Augie is coming an impressive sweep of then-No. 15/16 Arizona State at home last weekend, while the Beavers dropped a home-and-home series with in-state rival Minnesota Duluth.

20th-ranked Minnesota State is home for the first time in 2025-26 this weekend, when it hosts Rensselaer for a non-league series. The Mavericks tied then-No. 17 Wisconsin twice last weekend, while the Engineers dropped a pair to then-No. 9 Boston College and then-No. 14 Providence by matching 5-1 score lines. MSU owns a 3-2-1 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to October 7, 2011 - a 1-0 Mavericks win. The two teams split their most recent meeting in Troy, N.Y., in October of 2024.

The Tommies open Lee & Penny Anderson Arena this weekend with a series against No. 15 Providence College. The Tommies split with Air Force last weekend, including a school-record 11 goals in an 11-2 win on Friday. The Friars picked up their first win of the year last Saturday against RPI, winning 5-1. This is the first meeting between the two programs.
