Weekend Preview: Nine In Action

All nine CCHA teams hit the ice this weekend for the first time in 2025-26. No. 20 Minnesota State clashes with No. 17 Wisconsin on Thursday and Friday, as the Mavericks face long-time head coach Mike Hastings for the first time since he left Mankato. Bemidji State takes on Minnesota Duluth in a home-and-home series that opens in Bemidji on Friday night, while Augustana welcomes No. 15/16 Arizona State to Midco Arena for its home-opening weekend. 

Northern Michigan also opens its home slate with a two-game set against No. 19/20 Colorado College, while St. Thomas flies west to face Air Force for a pair. The nightcap on Friday and Saturday features a Michigan Tech trip to Fairbanks to take on Alaska.

In exhibition action, Bowling Green welcomes Windsor to Slater Family Ice Arena on Friday night, while Ferris State and Lake Superior State travel to Plymouth, Mich., to battle the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 squad and Simon Fraser.

A pair of ranked teams collide in Madison this Thursday and Friday night at the Kohl Center, when No. 20 Minnesota State visits No. 17 Wisconsin for the first time since Mike Hastings left the Mavericks to coach the Badgers. In all, nine Wisconsin staff and players have ties to MSU. Wisconsin owns a 26-17-4 lead in the all-time series.

The Bulldogs head to Plymouth, Mich., for a pair of exhibition games on Friday afternoon and Saturday night against Simon Fraser and the USNTDP Under-18s, respectively. Coming a split with previously first-ranked Western Michigan, Ferris State looks to gain experience away from regular season play at USA Hockey Arena.

Lake Superior State takes a break from regular season action this weekend, when it travels to Plymouth, Mich., to face the USNTDP Under-18 Team and Simon Fraser on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, respectively. After opening the season with a sweep at Stonehill, the Lakers fell at home to Lindenwood last weekend.

The Falcons host the University of Windsor in an exhibition match-up this Friday at Slater Family Ice Arena, coming off a road sweep at the hands of Niagara. Bowling Green is 3-0 against the Lancers all-time, but the two programs have not met since 1971 in Flint, Mich., - an 11-0 BGSU triumph.

Northern Michigan opens its 2025-26 home schedule this weekend when it hosts No. 19/20 Colorado College at Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich. The Wildcats own a 31-24-1 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1984. They are 22-5-1 at home in the series, but haven't hosted the Tigers since 1996. CC swept last year's series in Colorado Springs by scores of 4-3 (in OT) and 6-1.

BSU renews its rivalry with the Bulldogs with a home-and-home series this weekend. Opening at home on Friday, the Beavers will look to rebound following a sweep at the hands of St. Cloud State last weekend. Minnesota Duluth split with Augustana at home the last time out, taking the opener 4-1, before being blanked by the Vikings, 4-0, on Saturday. UMD is 29-17-5 in the all-time series against Bemidji State, with each team winning on the road in a split last season.

The Tommies battle Atlantic Hockey foe Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend, marking the first meeting between the two programs. St. Thomas was swept by then-No. 10 North Dakota in a home-and-home series last weekend, while the Falcons tied then-No. 5 Denver, 1-1, before falling to previously unranked Colorado College, 4-2, on Saturday.

The Vikings host No. 15/16 Arizona State to ring in a new season at Midco Arena on Friday and Saturday night. Augie delivered a bounce back perfornance last Saturday in shutting out UND on the road after falling on Friday. The Sun Devils did some recovery of their own after an 0-2 start against No. 6 Penn State, they defeated Notre Dame and Alaska to win the Ice Breaker Tournament at Mullett Arena last weekend. The two programs split their previous meetings in Tempe, Ariz., during AU's inaugural season.

The Huskies, who are coming off a bye weekend, travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, this weekend to take on the Nanooks. Michigan Tech is 26-7-1 in the all-time series, which dates back to 1990. Tech and UAF are meeting for the fourth consecutive season and the Huskies have gone 5-1-1 over that stretch, which includes a Great Lakes Invitational matchup in 2023-24 that Michigan Tech won, 3-2.
